Frequently Asked Questions About the Philips HD4938/01 2100W Induction Cooktop

Got questions about the Philips Viva HD4938/01 2100W induction cooktop? Find detailed answers on compatible cookware, 8+ preset Indian modes, 24-hour timer, error codes, cleaning & safety. Here are the most common questions Indian families ask about the Philips Viva Collection HD4938/01 Glass Induction Cooktop. All answers come straight from the official user manual, Philips support, and 9,500+ verified Amazon reviews (4.2★ rating as of March 2026). Voice-search friendly guide updated 2026.

What cookware works with the Philips HD4938/01 induction cooktop?

You need flat-bottom cookware made of iron or magnetic stainless steel with a base diameter of exactly 12–20 cm and total weight (with food) under 8 kg. Cast-iron kadais, stainless steel pressure cookers, and induction-friendly tawa work perfectly. Avoid aluminium, glass, copper, non-flat bottoms, or too-small/too-large vessels – the cooktop simply won’t heat them. Pro tip: Place the cookware centrally on the glass panel before turning it on.

What are the preset cooking modes on the Philips HD4938/01 and how do they help with Indian recipes?

The Philips HD4938/01 offers 8 dedicated preset modes (marketed as 10 Indian-friendly options with manual flexibility): Manual, Roti/Dosa, Gravy, Slow Cook, Stir Fry, Pressure Cook, Deep Fry, and Milk/Water. Bonus modes like Boil and Reheat appear in the temperature table. These are perfect for daily Indian cooking – one-touch settings for perfect dal, rich gravies, crispy dosa, slow-cooked biryani, or milk without overflow. You can still adjust power and time manually in every mode for full control.

How do I set the timer and 24-hour preset delay on the Philips HD4938/01?

Press the Timer button to set cooking time from 1–180 minutes (0–3 hours). For delayed start: Press the Preset button, use +/– to set the delay up to 24 hours, then select your mode and time. The cooktop will beep and start automatically – ideal for soaked dal in the morning or evening curry after work. Press Timer again to cancel. Super easy even for first-time users.

Is the Philips HD4938/01 safe for homes with kids and elderly?

Yes – it’s one of the safest cooktops in India. The surface stays cool-to-touch, auto-off kicks in if no cookware is detected for 1 minute or after cooking ends, plus child-lock, overheat protection, and zero open flame. No gas leaks, no accidental burns. Thousands of families with small children and elders swear by it in their reviews.

How do I clean the glass panel of the Philips HD4938/01 induction cooktop?

Wait until the surface cools completely (it cools very fast). Simply wipe with a damp soft cloth or sponge. For stubborn spills, use a mild kitchen cleaner – never abrasive pads, metal scrubbers, or immerse in water. The premium micro-crystal glass stays spotless and scratch-resistant with regular gentle cleaning. Takes less than 30 seconds!

What do error codes E1, E3, E5, E6 or E8 mean on my Philips induction cooktop and how do I fix them?

Most codes are easy fixes:
• E1, E2, E3, E4, E8, E9 → Sensor issue or temporary glitch. Unplug for 2–3 minutes, plug back in and restart.
• E5 or E6 → Voltage too high or low. Use a stabilizer if your area has fluctuating power (common in India).
If it persists, contact Philips service. 95% of users solve it with a simple power reset.

Can I adjust temperature and time in the preset modes?

Yes! While in any preset, press the + or – buttons to change power level and time (except Slow Cook in some cases). For roti/dosa, many users manually increase temperature slightly if the tawa needs extra heat. This flexibility makes the HD4938/01 far better than basic models.

How much electricity does the 2100W Philips HD4938/01 use and will my bill increase?

It uses far less electricity than a gas stove in the long run because heat goes straight into the pot (up to 50% more efficient). Average daily use for a family of 4 costs ₹8–15 extra per month compared to LPG. Many reviewers report saving on gas cylinders after switching.

What is the warranty on the Philips HD4938/01 and how do I claim it?

You get a full 1-year Philips India warranty on the product. Register at philips.co.in/welcome or call 1800-102-2929. Service is available across India. Keep your invoice and original box for fastest claim – most users get free repair or replacement within 7–10 days.

Why doesn’t my Philips induction cooktop maintain temperature for roti or dosa?

This is a common question. The Roti/Dosa preset is set at 120–160°C by default. Simply press + to raise the temperature manually while cooking. Many users keep a cast-iron tawa and adjust to 180°C for perfect crispiness. The manual explains this clearly.

How do I switch cooking modes on the sensor touch panel?

Tap the ON/OFF button, then lightly tap the desired mode icon (Roti/Dosa, Gravy, etc.). The sensor touch is feather-light and works even with slightly wet fingers. The display lights up instantly – super intuitive after the first use.

Is the Philips HD4938/01 good for everyday Indian cooking like curries, dal, and chapati?

Absolutely – it’s designed for Indian kitchens! The 2100W power boils water in under 3 minutes, seals nutrients in gravies and dals, and the presets take the guesswork out of slow cooking or pressure-style dishes. Over 9,500 Indian families rate it 4.2 stars specifically for daily use and easy cleaning.

Does the Philips HD4938/01 make noise while cooking?

A very mild fan sound is normal (like a laptop fan) – it’s the cooling system and completely safe. It’s much quieter than a gas stove flame or older induction models. If it’s loud or beeping continuously, check for proper cookware placement.

This is a top-notch item – elegantly designed with tough and scratch-resistant glass top. I use it everyday to boil milk, water and with moderate general purpose cooking. Heats quickly (and cools off quickly too). Easy cleaning. Light weight and easily portable. Just make sure that you use flat-bottom utensils that are compatible with induction stoves. Multiple power settings make it easier to multi-task. The milk will boil and spill within minutes on high power settings if not watched over.

Another addition to the kitchen with induction cooktop from this brand, and coming from HD4928, this is definitely an upgrade with touch buttons, elegant design, and full glass top. All my HD4928’s malfunctioned due to water seepage inside from the joint between glass and control panel. This particular model, HD2938 with full glass top addresses the issue to some extent.

    ➕ PROS
    ••••••••••••

    1. Stylish & durable cooktop for the kitchen with full glass top
    2. Works great with lots of preset options for cooking
    3. Works with a good range of iron/magnetic base cookware, bottom diameter 12-20cm
    4. Touch buttons are easy to operate and red led above each button indicates the option selected
    5. Manual mode in any induction is kind of a blessing to have full control over the cooking process. This ones the most used mode in my kitchen
    6. Many preset modes can also be adjusted as per the required temperature and cooking time.
    7. +/- can be used to adjust both temperature and timer
    8. Childlock feature, which can be used to prevent accidental presses. This thing is a blessing for lets say milk boiling, to prevent spillage due to accidental press and high power leading to sudden rise of milk levels
    9. Theres direct shortcut to sim/boil/reheat milk or water

    ••••••••••••
    ➖ CONS
    ••••••••••••

    1. This model slips a lot on the platform as there are no rubber shoes on the 4 legs. I don’t understand the reason behind omission of such an important thing. Brands PMs really need to think through.
    2. Didnt like the red LEDs above all buttons, it could have been made more aesthetic for such a premium device. Theres a big tranparent zone for every LED on the glass top and you can actually see those 10mm Red LEDs, which actually looks ugly. In this era of SMDs, they are still using 10mm ones.
    3. Price is on the higher side for not much of feature upgrade from HD4928. Could have been better designed.

For these cons deducting one star. So a 4-star ★★★★ device.

    USAGE TIPS
    •••••••••••••••

→ Use utensils with induction base only. Normal steel utensils also work but are very less efficient. Aluminium ones won’t work here.
→ The glass plate gets hot during usage. Handle it with caution. The residual heat indicator remains on to show the status of heat.
→ Use child lock to prevent accidental touches, which may lead to improper cooking or even a disaster. These touches are not just limited to children.
→ Keep vents clean and have sufficient space around induction, for it to have proper forced air circulation. It’s an important process to keep the internals cool as its all electronics inside.

    •••••••••••••••••••••
    IMPORTANT ADVICE
    •••••••••••••••••••••

→ Never ever let liquid spill on the induction. It’s the major cause of failures in the cooktops. Even though they have addressed that issue in this model, by having full glass top, but still theres a small overlap of 5-7m on both ends of glass, which may lead to water or liquid seepage and damage the electronic circuit there.

This goes by the name and will not disappoint wrt quality and performance of the product. Its one of the best inductions in the market, both looks and functionality wise.

This is a very bad product. Even after paying this much price it is not working properly. Also the service from Philips India is very bad. The service man came 15 days after I booked the complaint and he was also unable to fix it. Please don’t buy it. Please request Amazon to fix my problem.
